The adverb ἀξίως is derived from the adjective ἄξιος, often translated as “worthy,” which implies great value or merit. Yet the adjective can also mean “correspondingly fitting or appropriate” (BDAG, 2), and it is that meaning which applies to the adverb here. Paul does not mean to imply that the Ephesians’ walk can merit or equal the worth of God’s calling; rather, he encourages them to walk “in accord with, in a manner appropriate to” their calling.14 As ἀξίως is an adverb modifying the verb
